Course Title:  Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS)

Course length 2-3 hours (depending on number of delegates)

Maximum number to attend - 15

This course is aimed at all staff in health and social care.  

At the end of the training session, there is a short written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.

Key findings and recommendations of the Lords Select Committee

Understand why DOLS were introduced

Identify staff responsibilities

Understand duty of care

 Explain when someone can be deprived on their liberty

Be aware when DOLS cannot be used


Restraint as defined in the s6(4) Mental Capacity Act 2005


Describe the circumstances where the restrictions or restraint being used amount to a person being deprived of their liberty

Describe the actions that are necessary to ensure that a person is lawfully deprived of their liberty

Explain why a worker should raise their concerns with their supervisor / manager when they think a person may be being deprived of their liberty
